The Proverbs of Solomon

I thought it would be a good idea to start taking a walk together through the book of Proverbs.

Pro 1:1  The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel;

The name Solomon means peaceful.

1Ch 22:9  Behold, a son shall be born to thee, who shall be a man of rest; and I will give him rest from all his enemies round about: for his name shall be Solomon, and I will give peace and quietness unto Israel in his days.

Solomon was the son of King David to his wife Bath-shua. Bath-sheba is also called Bath-shua.

1Ch 3:5  And these were born unto him in Jerusalem; Shimea, and Shobab, and Nathan, and Solomon, four, of Bath-shua the daughter of Ammiel:

2Sa 11:3  And David sent and inquired after the woman. And one said, Is not this Bath-sheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?

King David wanted to build a fine house for God, but God had a different plan.

1Ch 22:8  But the word of the LORD came to me, saying, Thou hast shed blood abundantly, and hast made great wars: thou shalt not build a house unto my name, because thou hast shed much blood upon the earth in my sight.

1Ch 17:4  Go and tell David my servant, Thus saith the LORD, Thou shalt not build me a house to dwell in:

1Ch 17:11  And it shall come to pass, when thy days be expired that thou must go to be with thy fathers, that I will raise up thy seed after thee, which shall be of thy sons; and I will establish his kingdom.
1Ch 17:12  He shall build me a house, and I will establish his throne forever.


When Solomon became King he was very young, He asked God for wisdom to be able to rule his people and this pleased our Father.

2Ch 1:7  In that night did God appear unto Solomon, and said unto him, Ask what I shall give thee.
2Ch 1:8  And Solomon said unto God, Thou hast showed great mercy unto David my father, and hast made me to reign in his stead.
2Ch 1:9  Now, O LORD God, let thy promise unto David my father be established: for thou hast made me king over a people like the dust of the earth in multitude.
2Ch 1:10  Give me now wisdom and knowledge, that I may go out and come in before this people: for who can judge this thy people, that is so great?
2Ch 1:11  And God said to Solomon, Because this was in thine heart, and thou hast not asked riches, wealth, or honor, nor the life of thine enemies, neither yet hast asked long life; but hast asked wisdom and knowledge for thyself, that thou mayest judge my people, over whom I have made thee king:
2Ch 1:12  Wisdom and knowledge is granted unto thee; and I will give thee riches, and wealth, and honor, such as none of the kings have had that have been before thee, neither shall there any after thee have the like.


1Ki 4:29  And God gave Solomon wisdom and understanding exceeding much, and largeness of heart, even as the sand that is on the sea shore.
1Ki 4:30  And Solomon's wisdom excelled the wisdom of all the children of the east country, and all the wisdom of Egypt.
1Ki 4:31  For he was wiser than all men; than Ethan the Ezrahite, and Heman, and Chalcol, and Darda, the sons of Mahol: and his fame was in all nations round about.
1Ki 4:32  And he spoke three thousand proverbs: and his songs were a thousand and five.
1Ki 4:33  And he spoke of trees, from the cedar tree that is in Lebanon even unto the hyssop that springeth out of the wall: he spoke also of beasts, and of fowl, and of creeping things, and of fishes.
1Ki 4:34  And there came of all people to hear the wisdom of Solomon, from all kings of the earth, which had heard of his wisdom.

We can ask our Father for wisdom too and He will give it to us. Let us all ask for wisdom from God while we walk through this book of Proverbs.

Jam 1:5  If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.

Being wise in the earth isn't the same as the wisdom we can recieve from our Father.


Jam 3:13  Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him show out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom.
Jam 3:14  But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth.
Jam 3:15  This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish.
Jam 3:16  For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work.
Jam 3:17  But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.
Jam 3:18  And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace.

We all need to strive for the wisdom of God not the wisdom of man. What is wisdom how should we start out looking for it?  

Psa 111:10  The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments: his praise endureth forever.

The word fear above is better translated as reverence. We should reverence our Father not "fear" Him. The word translated fear in the verse above is the Hebrew word H3374.

We can all show our reverence to our Father to begin gaining wisdom by our study of His Love letter to us, the Bible, and by asking Him to grant us understanding of wisdom that comes from Him.

Pro 1:2  To know wisdom and instruction; to perceive the words of understanding;

Deu 4:4  But ye that did cleave unto the LORD your God are alive every one of you this day.
Deu 4:5  Behold, I have taught you statutes and judgments, even as the LORD my God commanded me, that ye should do so in the land whither ye go to possess it.
Deu 4:6  Keep therefore and do them; for this is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the nations, which shall hear all these statutes, and say, Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.

When we cleave to our Father, have reverence for Him, listen to His Word, have faith in His Word and obey His Word we will be truly alive.  We will gain in wisdom by following His instruction we will gain understanding we will gain life. By living the way our Father wants us to, others will see how alive we are. We can be examples to them. They will learn to love our Father the way we do when they see that we are wise and have understanding because we follow our Father's instructions.

2Ti 3:15  And that from a child thou hast known the holy Scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
2Ti 3:16  All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
2Ti 3:17  That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.

God is good. Through His instruction we can learn the difference between Good and evil. By having faith in Christ we have salvation. We show our faith in Him by following Him and His instruction.


Joh 1:14  And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

With His truth and grace we can see His love for us. He gives us instruction because He loves us. He makes us His children through his Love. Through His grace He purges us of the evil that has found us. He paid the price for us so that we may live with Him everlasting without evil.

Pro 1:3  To receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, and judgment, and equity;

The word wisdom in the 1:2 verse is

In verse 1:2 we are told to know wisdom.. that means to see it by observation. We are learning.
In verse 1:3 we are told to receive wisdom..that means to accept it. We are believing. We are taking it for our own. We are starting to see the wisdom in truth and justice in order to see how that is fair to everyone equally.

Judgement from God is always fair and just for everyone.

Pro 1:4  To give subtlety to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion.

Once we Know and receive wisdom we should then teach it to those who are open to learn. Not in a way that goes over their head or confuses them with too much information at once but in a way that they are able to gain a plan for their life. A plan that our Father has in mind for them.



Isa 35:7  And the parched ground shall become a pool, and the thirsty land springs of water: in the habitation of dragons, where each lay, shall be grass with reeds and rushes.
Isa 35:8  And a highway shall be there, and a way, and it shall be called The way of holiness; the unclean shall not pass over it; but it shall be for those: the wayfaring men, though fools, shall not err therein.

Pro 22:6  Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.


Mat 5:15  Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.
Mat 5:16  Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

Pro 1:5  A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels:


A wise man will listen and consider what others have to say and make an intelligent effort to discern weather what they say has any merit and how it might apply to their own life. This will add to his own understanding. If he thinks he already knows everything then he isn't open to adding to his knowledge. If he realizes that he doesn't already know everything he needs to know then he  will seek out good advise and profit from that good advise by adding it to what he already knows. He will grow in wisdom by listening and considering what others have to say about what has happened to them.  The old saying two heads are better then one comes to mind and there is strength in numbers. When we are open to hearing what our Father tells us we will increase in our learning and understanding, we will seek out what our Father has to say. What wiser counsel could we seek out then what our Father tells us through His Word. The Bible is filled with examples for us to follow. It is filled with examples of what people have already gone through in their own lives so that if we consider what happened to them, their choices and the outcome of those choices we will be able to improve the quality of our own lives by increasing our wisdom and understanding.

Ecc 1:9  The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.
Ecc 1:10  Is there any thing whereof it may be said, See, this is new? it hath been already of old time, which was before us.

Psa 119:98  Thou through thy commandments hast made me wiser than mine enemies: for they are ever with me.
Psa 119:99  I have more understanding than all my teachers: for thy testimonies are my meditation.
Psa 119:100  I understand more than the ancients, because I keep thy precepts.

2Pe 1:2  Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord,
2Pe 1:3  According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:
2Pe 1:4  Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
2Pe 1:5  And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge;
2Pe 1:6  And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness;
2Pe 1:7  And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity.
2Pe 1:8  For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Pro 1:6  To understand a proverb, and the interpretation; the words of the wise, and their dark sayings.

This verse reminds me of this.....

Mat 13:10  And the disciples came, and said unto him, Why speakest thou unto them in parables?
Mat 13:11  He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given.
Mat 13:12  For whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall have more abundance: but whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken away even that he hath.
Mat 13:13  Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand.
Mat 13:14  And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah, which saith, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive:
Mat 13:15  For this people's heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.
Mat 13:16  But blessed are your eyes, for they see: and your ears, for they hear.
Mat 13:17  For verily I say unto you, That many prophets and righteous men have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them.

Our Father gives us the tools to understand Him and what He wants us to learn but first we have to have faith in Him and follow Him then we will truly see and understand.


Isa 6:5  Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts.
Isa 6:6  Then flew one of the seraphims unto me, having a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with the tongs from off the altar:
Isa 6:7  And he laid it upon my mouth, and said, Lo, this hath touched thy lips; and thine iniquity is taken away, and thy sin purged.
Isa 6:8  Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me.
Isa 6:9  And he said, Go, and tell this people, Hear ye indeed, but understand not; and see ye indeed, but perceive not.
Isa 6:10  Make the heart of this people fat, and make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and convert, and be healed.
Isa 6:11  Then said I, Lord, how long? And he answered, Until the cities be wasted without inhabitant, and the houses without man, and the land be utterly desolate,
Isa 6:12  And the LORD have removed men far away, and there be a great forsaking in the midst of the land.
Isa 6:13  But yet in it shall be a tenth, and it shall return, and shall be eaten: as a teil tree, and as an oak, whose substance is in them, when they cast their leaves: so the holy seed shall be the substance thereof.

Eze 12:2  Son of man, thou dwellest in the midst of a rebellious house, which have eyes to see, and see not; they have ears to hear, and hear not: for they are a rebellious house. Eze 12:3  Therefore, thou son of man, prepare thee stuff for removing, and remove by day in their sight; and thou shalt remove from thy place to another place in their sight: it may be they will consider, though they be a rebellious house.

We must ask to be healed from our blindness and deafness. When we ask it shall be given to us.

Mat 21:20  And when the disciples saw it, they marveled, saying, How soon is the fig tree withered away!
Mat 21:21  Jesus answered and said unto them, Verily I say unto you, If ye have faith, and doubt not, ye shall not only do this which is done to the fig tree, but also if ye shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; it shall be done.
Mat 21:22  And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive.

Pro 1:7  The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.

So far we have been told

1. To know wisdom and instruction
2. To perceive words of understanding
3. To receive instruction of wisdom, justice, judgment and equity
4. To give knowledge and discretion
5. To be wise hear increase learning, seek wise counsels
6. To understand a proverb and the interpretation

and now the 7th and most important one and the one that we should start out with.

7. To reverence the LORD is the beginning of knowledge.

When ever you see LORD all caps in the Bible it is referring to our FATHER. The great I am that I am.

Who are the fools that will not receive and even despise wisdom and chastisement and instruction from our Father? They are the ones who have eyes but do not see and ears but do not hear spiritually, they are too wrapped up in the physical side of things to be able to perceive the spiritual side of things. They only care for themselves they do not care for our Father so they never gain His wisdom and knowledge. Their physical eyes blind them from seeing spiritual things.

Pro 1:8  My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother:

The use of My son shows a tender reguard to the reader.


Eph 6:1  Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right.
Eph 6:2  Honor thy father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise;
Eph 6:3  That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.
Eph 6:4  And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.
Eph 6:5  Servants, be obedient to them that are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in singleness of your heart, as unto Christ;

Pro 1:9  For they shall be an ornament of grace unto thy head, and chains about thy neck.

Instruction and Law= grace and chains.

A well prised attribute is gained in the training of one's children... it will be something highly prised and of great beauty...  To our Father to the parents and to the children.

Instruction in the Law of our Father is something of great beauty and worth to our Father and to our children.


Pro 19:18  Chasten thy son while there is hope, and let not thy soul spare for his crying.

Pro 13:24  He that spareth his rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chasteneth him quickly.

Pro 22:15  Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.

Pro 23:13  Withhold not correction from the child: for if thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die.
Pro 23:14  Thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from hell.

Deu 8:5  Thou shalt also consider in thine heart, that, as a man chasteneth his son, so the LORD thy God chasteneth thee.

Children who have been corrected by their parents will be a pleasure to their parents.

Pro 29:15  The rod and reproof give wisdom: but a child left to himself bringeth his mother to shame.

Pro 29:17  Correct thy son, and he shall give thee rest; yea, he shall give delight unto thy soul.



Heb 12:5  And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him:
Heb 12:6  For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.
Heb 12:7  If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not?
Heb 12:8  But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons.
Heb 12:9  Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live?
Heb 12:10  For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness.
Heb 12:11  Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.

Psa 118:18  The LORD hath chastened me sore: but he hath not given me over unto death.

Pro 1:10  My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not.

That is pretty straight forward I would think...


Psa 1:1  Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.
Psa 1:2  But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.
Psa 1:3  And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.
Psa 1:4  The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away.
Psa 1:5  Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.
Psa 1:6  For the LORD knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish.

That gives us a lot more detail.... the consequences for not following their instruction...



Rom 16:17  Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offenses contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them.
Rom 16:18  For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple.
Rom 16:19  For your obedience is come abroad unto all men. I am glad therefore on your behalf: but yet I would have you wise unto that which is good, and simple concerning evil.
Rom 16:20  And the God of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.


These verses I think explain what to do good as to what not to do bad.

Eph 5:6  Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience.
Eph 5:7  Be not ye therefore partakers with them.
Eph 5:8  For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light:
Eph 5:9  (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;)
Eph 5:10  Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord.
Eph 5:11  And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.
Eph 5:12  For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret.

Pro 1:15  My son, walk not thou in the way with them; refrain thy foot from their path:

In 1:10-14 we were told to watch out for sinners that entice, stay away from those who shed innocent blood. stay away from ones that promise you riches...and "have one purse" ...  1:15 tells us to not walk with them "in the way"... and not to follow their path....



O that my ways were directed to keep thy statutes!
Psa 119:6  Then shall I not be ashamed, when I have respect unto all thy commandments.
Psa 119:7  I will praise thee with uprightness of heart, when I shall have learned thy righteous judgments.
Psa 119:8  I will keep thy statutes: O forsake me not utterly.
