Children learn what the adults around them value. When a child grows up around maps and globes they learn to organize and increase their perception of the world they are growing up in. When they hear of world events on the news they will have a much deeper intellectual picture of the places, peoples and cultures that they are hearing about and will be able to discuss intelligently the events taking place with maturity and understanding in relation to the what, where, and why of the things that are taking place. Knowing about the weather, climate, physical formations of a place, crops, and people will help them in tomorrow's world with their businesses and jobs. They will have greater knowledge of the global marketplace and the people they will be interacting with as communication and travel enable us to use the whole world as our platform for growth. Some day our global address might be as important as our home address is now. To find our global address we need to use longitude and latitude.
Longitude measures the distance east and west of the prime meridian, an imaginary line running between the North Pole and the South Pole through Greenwich, England. Latitude tells us how far north or south we are from the equator. Where these two lines intersects the degrees will tell us our global address.
A map Legend tells you what the symbols or colors on the map stand for, like a star for a Capital, or a dot for a major city. A size scale guide for miles or kilometers, blue for water that shows lakes, rivers, oceans Green for flatlands, grass, or forest, Brown for mountains or mountain ranges.
Kinds of Maps: political, physical, relief, population, climate, weather, forecast maps
Political Maps are made up from man-made boundaries. People decide where the boundaries will divide the land, this can be an imaginary line or people can use a natural formation to divide the land like a river or mountain. The capital of a state or country, major cities, roads, rivers, or lakes are also shown on political maps.
Physical and Relief maps show the natural or physical formations of a state or country. They may also show types of trees or other vegetation in an area on the map.
Population maps show the population density in different areas on a map, Check the map legend to see the number of people per square mile in different color sections of a population map.
Climate maps, Weather Maps, or Forecast Maps can show the average temperature , rainfall and snowfall per year or for a certain month. They can also show desert, rain forest, or icy tundra.
People adjust to their environment to better suit their needs and improve their way of life. They use their natural resources and their history reflects the reason they settled there to begin with and how they live. How they use their resources will determine their futures.
